Welcome

Who Is JNP?

James North Productions (JNP) is home of musician, producer and mix engineer James North.  JNP is a real, world class recording studio churning through clients for release material every day.   More information can be found at JNP’s homepage.

Why mixing?

Ultimately, an artist or band spends time with a producer in a high quality studio from start to finish and ends up with a fantastic release product. Some artists may not have the capital to support this project, so recording at home with modern gear and computers is their only option.

Mixing takes the individual tracks that you recorded (mono or stereo stems) and runs them through various processors (EQ/compression/delay/reverb etc) to enhance and separate each instrument out in the final sound.  It then takes the ear of a mix engineer to work out where each sound should sit in the mix.  There is a huge difference between a poorly mixed record and a well mixed one.

James North is a world class mix engineer who can bring his own pristine style to your own recordings in an affordable manner. This will ensure that the best possible sound is going to result from the recordings you have undertaken.

If you have recorded at another professional studio and require extra time and effort to be spent on your mix because it is going to be released or has label interest, please contact JNP to discuss your major project further.

Extra Instrumentation

One of the many advantages of using JNP is that James North is also a session grade drummer, bassist, guitarist and piano/keys player.  On a daily basis, parts are written for all of these instruments in the production process for clients produced by JNP at the studio.

Real instruments will push your recording to the next level.  If you would like extra instrumentation in your songs, you can request it as part of the mixing service.

Requirements

JNP Mixing uses Cubase as its editing and mixing platform. Cubase is made by Steinberg, who are a German company famous for making audio software for decades. If you use Nuendo, Pro Tools, Logic, Alberton, Sonar, Reason etc, it is easy to save or export your recordings in a format that JNP Mixing can use.

You can either:

  1. Export your entire project using OMF export.  This will create a single file that you can upload or,
  2. Export each individual track or instrument out to AIFF or WAV format using solo mode.  Please also make sure you export the tracks from the ZERO timestamp/bar and include the BPM in a small text file in your upload.

Please make sure that any MIDI or Synth instruments are converted (exported) to audio files prior to uploading.  Also try to ensure that your audio files are in as high quality format as is possible.  Generally speaking, 24bit 48Khz is what JNP works with.
